Sports injuries and pain – when to get it checked

If you enjoy sports of any kind you will be aware there is always a risk of sustaining a personal injury. Inevitably some sports have a much larger risk than others and often result in serious injuries. It is normally 24
pretty obvious when you should see a doctors about a personal injury but what about when it’s not so obvious?

Any personal injury can be stressful and it can be hard to decipher between normal muscle soreness from a hard workout or niggling aches and pains which could lead to serious injury.

Doctor Paul D. Thompson is a keen marathon runner and athlete. He is a cardiologist at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, New York. Doctor Paul thinks more often than not people shouldn’t go to the doctors. He says this because whatever doctor you go to they will just advise you to stop running or training.

Even a good sports doctor will just advise stopping training. Rather than going through the trouble of making and going to a doctor’s appointment, as well as having to make a co-payment, save yourself the trouble and the fee.

Doctor Volker Musahl another keen athlete, competing in marathons and triathlons states “if you want to continue to run, don’t see a doctor”. Dr. Musahl is an orthopaedist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical center and agrees with Dr. Thompson. He would also just recommend rest to anyone who came in with a sports injury.

Although Dr. Musahl would offer this advice to anyone with the normal aches and pains every sports people suffer at some point, he warns there are certain signs to look out for.

Signs you need to seek medical attention:-

  • If your pain increases
  • If you are still in pain when resting or at night
  • Swelling of any joints
  • Bruises that do not heal
  • Locked or unsteady joints

It is also advisable to see a doctor if you notice you are not recovering as quickly as you normally would. You know your body better than anyone and you know how long it takes to recover from injury and soreness.

After a 15mile long run on a Sunday, it is likely your knees and joints will be aching and sore. You will know how you typically recover and whether it takes a few days. If your recovery is taking unusually long there may be an underlying problem.

Doctors cannot make muscle/ tendon pain disappear or recover faster. Some treatments that provide pain relief can actually slow recovery.

Going to see a doctor can sometimes make you worry even more than not going. A full diagnostic check-up can involve scans which could highlight anomalies which aren’t even causing a problem. MRI scans can be extremely sensitive showing rips and tears everywhere but this doesn’t necessarily mean there is anything to worry about.

If it is decided that your personal injury does require medical assistance, a capable doctor will be able to work with you to find out the cause of the injury. Your doctor should watch how you move to establish whether there are any biomechanical problems which could be the cause.

Getting Treatment

Firstly prevention is better than cure. By warming up and cooling down correctly you may just prevent getting sore or injured in the first place. has over 70 articles on how to warm up and stretch correctly for all types of exercise. Yoga is also amazing for building core strength and making your muscles much more supple so they don’t get injured. Yoga can also target particular troublesome areas.

There are many self-help treatments for personal injuries which doctors may not know about yet. It might be useful researching some of these before making a trip to your doctor.

For example; there are various studies which have found that eccentric contractions of a muscle speed up recovery of injuries such as tennis elbow and Achilles tendon. This would mean doing something like heel drops and raises off of a step for an Achilles tendon injury.

Dr. Musahl claims he never goes to the doctor with a sports related injury. He says it makes more sense to cross train or to rest completely, if the injury is bad enough, until the pain has disappeared. Athletes who have had the same injury before, know how long it should take to heal and deal with it themselves.

The most important thing to remember is, listen to your body. If you aren’t recovering as well as you normally do, go to the doctors otherwise rest is the best prescription for any sports injury.12

The Horrible Cost of Red Light Running

In October 2015, the unimaginable happened to a mother, her toddler, and another relative. A 43-year-old woman ran a red light at the Queens intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 108th street in Richmond Hill at around 6 p.m. The SUV plowed through the intersection and was struck by a northbound Kia, causing one of the vehicles in the two-car collision to jump the sidewalk where it hit the unsuspecting pedestrians. The 48-year-old mother tried to throw her 2-year-old daughter out of harm’s way, but was unsuccessful.

“The older woman had tire marks, a lot of cuts and marks,” Norman Alsaivi said of the 52-year-old relative. –A sight that has left him shaken.

Several bystanders and a nearby officer rushed to the scene to assist.

The 52-year-old victim, identified as Meena Mahabir of Queens, was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

The toddler, now in critical but stable condition, was also taken to Jamaica Hospital, where they then transferred her to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Both drivers, as well as the mother are all in stable condition, say police.

“Red-light running is a serious intersection safety issue across the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Traffic Safety Facts 2008 Report, there were more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulting in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injury crashes in 2008.” According to an article written for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.

With statistics like these, you are more likely to be injured in an accident where a driver fails to stop at a red light than any other type of crash. Drivers who disobey traffic controls are the most common cause of all urban crashes. An average of every 20 minutes someone runs a red light. About half of the red light violators will die in the accidents they cause. The other half are the passengers, pedestrians, cyclists caught in the wrong place and the wrong time.

If you needed more incentive to drive safely and obey traffic lights, remember that red light violators with a New York State driver’s license will get three points for every ticket issued. It is three points for ever ticket issued in person by a traffic officer. However, if the ticket is issued by a red light camera, it will not carry any points. Once a person accumulates 11 points, the license will be revoked.

Intersection safety should be everyone’s priority. The costs to society and the personal costs that result from running a red light are preventable. If you are the victim of a signal violator and have suffered a personal injury in New York, seek legal advice immediately. Quick Primer for Personal Injury Legal Terms

2Legalese can get confusing—even for people speaking and reading it all day. In order to make navigating the legal system a bit easier, here are some common terms you’ll come across as you investigate personal injury law firms in Florida, personal injury lawyers, and personal injury cases.

For complete clarity, let’s start at the beginning. What the heck is Personal Injury Law?

Personal Injury Law is a type of tort law that deals with personal injuries (not property injuries) such as those resulting from car accidents, medical malpractice, worker’s comp claims and slip and falls. Basically, if you are injured and you believe your injuries are the direct result of someone else’s actions (or inaction), you would want to seek out a personal injury lawyer in Florida. They will help you evaluate if you have case or help you seek a settlement.

A personal injury case is a lawsuit. It is not initiated by the government, like a criminal case. Instead, the injured party begins proceedings with their Florida personal injury John Bales Attorneys. The goal of the lawsuit is not to send the person that caused the injuries to jail, but to receive compensation for one’s injuries. In a personal injury case the plaintiff seeks damages from the defendant.

And who exactly are the plaintiff and the defendant?

12024218-orange-county-personal-injury-lawyer-300x197Let’s say you hire a firm to help you settle a case against an insurance company that has failed to pay out your claim. You’re sitting at a table with an estimable attorney from a Florida personal injury law firm by your side. You are the plaintiff in the case. The plaintiff is the person that is alleging that the other party caused injuries that have resulted in pain and suffering, and in this case, mounting medical bills.
At the other table is the insurance company’s attorneys. Sullen in the their dark gray suits, a pack of lawyers waits for the trail, scribbling on thick, yellow notepads. Those lawyers—for an insurance company, there’s rarely ever just one—are there to represent the defendant, in this case, that insurance company that hasn’t sent you a dime.

As we stated earlier, in a personal injury case, the plaintiff is seeking damages against the defendant. Damages, in this case, is another term for monetary compensation. Generally there’s a number affixed to the pain and suffering the plaintiff has undergone, and it should be enough to take care of their medical bills, any missed work, and any future medical bills.judicial_homepage

As the plaintiff, you have the option of choosing to have your case heard before a judge or a jury. Your lawyer will offer guidance as to what he or she thinks is best for your case. Essentially, you’ll be deciding  whether your lawyer will make your case in front of a judge, who will be the sole decider of a verdict and award, or in front of a jury of your peers. This is a good time to rely on the knowledge of your attorney. They’ve worked in front of both and will be able to advise you on which type of trial will be better for your case.

In a personal injury case, in Florida or any other state, the goal is to prove the defendant is responsible for the injuries to the plaintiff in order to reach a settlement or have a settlement handed down from the judge or jury. According to Wikipedia, a settlement in personal injury law is generally non-taxable money that the defendant is instructed to pay the plaintiff. Most personal injury cases are settled before anyone ever steps into a courtroom, making it a good idea to consult with an attorney about your injuries today.
